This was a fun project from Whistler in 2023. Lululemon created the Further event to showcase their investment in women’s ultra running.
What impressed me was how much they were actually giving towards the science and research of the athletes. Sure, they were developing several products to sell along the way, and very few decisions under capitalism do not have some type of return on investment. I guess sometimes we have to not hate the player, but rather hate the game. In this circumstance I believe the people working at Lululemon had a sincere effort to push the sport forward and use their status to help elevate women’s athletics to an entirely new level.
I wore a few hats during this shoot. The main role was as location sound mixer. In that, I had to be nimble and quick, catching up with ultra marathon runners while we documented the events in real time. Nothing was staged; so we were just capturing the feeling and emotion as it happened.
I also helped with location scouting to be able to lock down a unique location in a remarkable forest setting. Whistler has some amazing trails, but much of the surrounding forest isn’t in its pristine state, having been logged in the latter part of last century. So using local knowledge I recommended Cheakamus Lake in Garibaldi Provincial Park as an ideal location for Montana to run through the forest and not have any disctractions (especially sounds!)
The result was a great look into the psyche of this woman and what drove her to participate in a landmark ultra running event.
Hire Me to Be Your Next Sound Mixer For Branded Content
The ability to be nimble and resourceful is a skill that only comes with years of experience. If you want an experienced sound mixer for your crew that can get the job done, is fit, and fun to be around (if I may say), then I’d love for you to get in touch about your next project. I’m based in Vancouver, British Columbia, but I hold three passports (UK, USA, and Canada) and I’m willing to travel.
Hopefully we can chat soon!
