Five Reasons To Hire Steve Andrews as a Sound Mixer

Good sound will make or break a production. And if you don’t capture good sound on the spot, you might be in for a costly reshoot, or just as costly ADR session. So it’s imperative that you get it right the first time when hiring a sound mixer for a location shoot.

As someone who has been passionately recording sound for nearly a decade, I enjoy the ability to take the craft to its highest potential, realizing that good sound can tell a story that goes beyond the frame; that helps provide context to the images or can help move a story along. Here are a few reasons why hiring me would be a good move:

Versatility

I’ve captured sound in a helicopter, under a flight path, next to a construction site, and at high altitude on a mountain. There are many more situations, but you get the idea. Being versatile means that no matter what is happening, it’s good to have someone who can think quickly on the fly and work under pressure, to capture clean audio no matter the conditions or what the talent is wearing.

All smiles after a month at high altitude shooting for National Geographic.

Background

I’ve worked on productions large and small, and in multiple departments. This gives me an understanding beyond just audio to make for a well-rounded awareness of a shoot. I’ve worked in camera, and know focal lengths well enough to stay out of frame, or get in tight.

I also have worked in the production office, so I’m mindful of budgets and what needs to be done to move projects along, well before and long after the camera is rolling.

Resilience

Having survived the past 25 years as a young adult, I’ve seen terrorism fears, a financial crisis, a global pandemic, and now whatever you want to call this period. I know how to adapt to a changing industry, because it has been in consistent change throughout my entire career. This makes for someone who doesn’t balk at a challenge, or worry about uncertainty. They are important skills to have on a shoot.

Passion

Storytelling is what motivates me to show up. Good audio is a crucial part of telling a good story. I enjoy recording sound because it helps put people in the scene and gives them an understanding well beyond visuals. This is my modus operandi, and it has served me well. It allows me to get into the flow, to be a step ahead of the action, and to go the extra mile to make sure that the essence of the story is properly captured. It’s more than a paycheck, it’s a passion.

Gear

I’ve invested a lot into my gear. While sound doesn’t carry the same expense as camera work, my gear could afford a pretty nice new car. What’s even more is that I know how to use the gear, and for different circumstances. I have recorders that work far out of wireless range. I use the industry standard for mics and mixers. And what’s perhaps most important is that I have backups of all my gear, to quickly replace if for some reason they don’t work. That has saved me a number of times.
